How this registry is counted
One row is one campus. OpenStreetMap maps individual buildings, so buildings within 400 meters of each other fold into a single facility; a facility found by two sources within 400 meters of each other is one row that lists both. Coordinates are never altered — a merged row keeps the mapped building’s position.
Status is inferred from what each source states and nothing more: a mapped building or a Texas Comptroller registration means the facility exists; a TCEQ air permit with no building yet means it is permitted, not built; a registry entry under a non-air program says nothing about construction, and the row says so. No source here confirms anything on site.
State and county come from the U.S. Census TIGER/Line county boundaries the facility point falls inside. Every count on this page is computed from the same registry file — nothing is typed in by hand.

What is the Geolocity data-center registry?
A public list of US data-center facilities built only from sources Geolocity mirrors itself: buildings tagged as data centers in OpenStreetMap, the Texas Comptroller's data-center program registry, and facilities registered as data centers in TCEQ's Central Registry, with the county each one sits in from U.S. Census TIGER/Line boundaries. As of the September 18, 2026 snapshot it holds 975 facilities: 918 operational, 36 planned, 1 inactive, 20 registered, status unknown.
How many data centers are there in the United States?
This registry lists 975 facilities across 47 states and territories. The states with the most rows are Texas (201), Virginia (94), California (60), Oregon (46), Arizona (45). That is a count of what public sources record, not a census of the industry — a facility no source has mapped or registered is not here.
What do the status labels mean?
Operational means a mapped building, a Texas Comptroller registration, or news reporting the site as running. Under construction and paused come from news reports. Planned means a TCEQ air permit is on file with no mapped building yet, or an announcement — permits are issued before a building exists, so this is the early-warning state. Registered, status unknown means a state registry lists the site under a program that says nothing about construction.
How often is the registry refreshed?
The mirrored sources rebuild monthly and the registry snapshot rebuilds with them. Each page shows the snapshot date it was generated from. Rows only ever add — a source going quiet never removes a facility.
A data center I know about is missing. Why?
Because no source in the registry records it yet: the building is not tagged in OpenStreetMap, or it is outside Texas where the two state registries apply. The list is a floor, not a ceiling. The Geolocity parcel report adds live news and map lookups within 25 miles of a specific address.
Does a planned facility near me mean it will be built?
No. A permit or an announcement is evidence of intent, not of construction. Many permitted projects change, pause, or never break ground. This page shows the public record as it stands; it is information, not a prediction or advice.
